Background

African American Legislative Day 2008 included a Youth Caucus where students learned about the presidential caucuses and the electoral college.  More than 750 Students in grades 6 through 12 came from schools as far south as Vancouver and as far north as Marysville to participate.  Each table of students used an electronic voting device to enter group decisions on issues and candidates.

Electronic Voting

Noted pollster Stuart Elway of Elway Research developed the survey questions and conducted the electronic voting exercises.  Educational slideshows, background materials for students and teachers, entertainment, stage production, and program logistical support were provided by a team of consultants, including Reco Bembry, Isom Taylor, David Elfalan, and Steve Snead.  James Hampton and Blia Lee coordinated AmeriCorps volunteers from City Year who assisted Elway and the students throughout the day.
