The Commission's Position on Civil Rights
Discrimination is still alive and well in Washington State
Our state's racial climate is more livable now than it was 30 years ago. Yet, racism still exists and it touches Black people's lives daily.
Somewhere in our state, every day of the year, Black people encounter racism and discrimination. While these incidents may be less overt and less numerous than in the past -- they are still real and ongoing.
Our Personal Experiences
Here is a sampling of the things that we -- the board and staff of the Commission -- have personally experienced:
Research confirms that our experiences are not unique
- Racial Discrimination Continues to Play a Part in Hiring Decisions
- EEOC Statistics 1997 to 2006, Race Based Charges under Title VII
- NAACP State of the Disparity Report
We must keep fighting
As long as we continue to experience discrimination, we must continue to confront it and demand equitable treatment. There are many public and private organizations to help.
Feel free to contact us if you experience discrimination. We may be able to help you or we may refer you to another organization or agency that specialized in discrimination issues.
We also encourage you to contact the organizations at the links at the right side of this page and on the Resources to Fight page on our site.
