Commission Endorses Bills to:

• Restore voting rights for felons who’ve served their time and returned to the community. Nearly 17% of Black voters are disenfranchised under current law. One-pager / Track Senate Bill 5534 / Track House Bill 1517 / Voting Rights Restoration Campaign

• Reform the “Three-Strikes” sentencing law. Half the men locked up for life under this law in our state are Black. Many were convicted for low-level “Robbery 2” crimes. Two-Pager / Senate Bill Report SB 5292 (PDF) / Track SB 5292 / Fix 3 Strikes Coalition

• Offer career training for “green jobs” to disadvantaged youth. Opportunities in the “green economy” rarely go to Black youth, especially those with limited schooling. Senate Bill Report SB 5051 (PDF) / Track SB 5051

• Close the education gap afflicting Black students by boosting teacher training in cultural competency, creating model schools, and improving family involvement. Achievement/Opportunity Gap Study / Final Report Presentation Slideshow
